Best breakfast/brunch and Ms. Stowe: Diane McCarthy

When your alarm blares at 4:30 a.m. and you pry yourself out of your cozy bed and into the cold, dark void of a Stowe winter morning, you’re either going to the mountain to sample some tasty powder, or to stand in a line of sleepy but enthusiastic green-clad people waiting to get into McCarthy’s Restaurant for a festive feast.

The Irish-themed eatery has been serving up most excellent breakfasts and lunches — crispy-cushy home fries, corned beef and reubens, fluffy pancakes and Belgian waffles piled high with berries and cream, eggs any way you want them — to hungry locals and travelers for more than four decades under the superb and altrustic leadership of Diane McCarthy, (pictured right, with longtime server Jill Warner) who was also chosen by our readers as Ms. Stowe.

When she was named business person of the year by Stowe Area in 2010, then-president Chuck Baraw called her “an unsung, extraordinarily generous member of the Stowe community.”

Diane, we’re outing your amazingness here. Thanks for all you do!
