It’s time for … Maplerama!
Vermont’s yearly festival and celebration of all things maple is coming to Lamoille County next week. The event moves among Vermont’s 14 counties, and this year it’s Lamoille County’s turn again.
From Aug. 3 to 5, sugarmakers and people interested in the industry will descend on the area for an international maple contest and tours of local sugarhouses, farms and businesses involved in the business of maple.
Since Maplerama last came to the area in 2005, the number of trees tapped in Lamoille County has increased from 100,000 to an estimated 450,000 that produce roughly 2.1 million pounds of maple syrup per year.
The event kicks off Thursday, Aug. 3, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on Route 15 in Hyde Park, which will be the base of operations for the entire weekend.
Along with registration, a trade show and silent auction will take place that day, with cash bar and appetizers.
Judging for the maple contest and the first round of local tours will start early Friday, and a banquet and award announcements are scheduled that night. More tours and a barbecue are planned for Saturday.
Arnie Piper, president of the Lamoille County Maple Sugar Makers Association, emphasized that the event isn’t just for people making maple syrup. It’s meant to give “people a look at the sugaring industry in general.”
Tour stops will include 16 sugarhouses around Lamoille County, ranging in size from 140 taps to 83,000 taps. Tour stops are also planned at the 2016 Vermont Dairy Farm of the Year, a distillery, a winery, and the Butternut Mountain Farm production facility.
Almost every town in Lamoille County is represented on the tours.
Maplerama 2017 will also feature the latest technologies in evaporators — electric, steam, oil and wood pellet, as well as a couple of wood-fired evaporators.
New this year to Maplerama are forestry clinics taught by county foresters that focus on timber stand improvement, invasive plants in a sugarbush and similar topics.
