Peoples Academy has been named the most beautiful public school in the Green Mountain State. Architectural Digest named the Morristown school to its 2017 list of the most beautiful public schools in each of the 50 states.
“We certainly agree that it’s a stunning building,” said Tracy Wrend, superintendent of schools for Lamoille South Supervisory Union.
The original Peoples Academy was built in 1847, but the school’s current Copley Building first opened in 1929. Sitting at the top of the roundabout at the end of Copley Avenue, the imposing Neoclassical two-story building greets visitors as they head up the hill towards the school. The main school building, band shell and observatory were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
“We feel it really embodies the commitment of the community to public education and supports an environment that really speaks to high standards for student learning,” Wrend said. She added that if voters green-light a new gym or other construction at the school, the new building will match the look and feel of the current school.
“It absolutely has to honor the architectural traditions,” Wrend said.
