The Lamoille Regional Solid Waste Management District is
expanding its hours of operation for the Reuse Room at the Stowe
Transfer Station to Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and
Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 6 p.m.
Stowe’s Reuse Room has been so successful that additional hours are
required to move materials through as smoothly as possible.
“We are trying to maximize the reuse of goods brought to us,” says
Susan Alexander, manager of the waste district.
According to Alexander, the district was sometimes unable to get
ahead of the piles and ended up sending clothing directly to
recycling.
“We also need to alleviate the traffic on weekends,” she said, “so
by offering more hours during the week and into the evening we hope
Reuse Room customers will be able to shop then.”
The current set-up still isn’t ideal. The space is cramped, and
traffic flow is a concern. Alexander said that the district is
looking into other options for the room and would like to bring its
community partners together to develop a long-term plan that allows
the district to collect a wider range of reusable items, such as
construction materials.
“We envision a sustainable program that favors reuse, one of our
highest priorities, over disposal,” she said.
Reusable items such as clothing, furniture, household goods, and
recreational equipment are accepted for a small fee and at the
discretion of the attendant at many of the district’s
facilities.
