On Friday, Aug. 30, 19 Johnson State College community members set out on the Lamoille River to remove trash and debris from the water. The group was made up of student volunteers as well as an “Introduction to Outdoor Education” class. Volunteers and students removed 26 tires and six bags of trash from the river. Canoes were supplied by Johnson State College Outing Club and Bert’s Boats, presented in partnership with a Johnson State College community-service program called “SERVE-Local.”

The SERVE program at the college provides direct service based on community needs to encourage student leadership development and to assist Johnson State’s community partners. “SERVE Local” events include the biweekly Johnson Community meal at the United Church of Johnson on Wednesdays, as well as activities at animal shelters, nursing homes, community centers and outdoor locations throughout the academic year.
