Sylvia Hyde (Schmokel) Trevor, 55, of Stowe died Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at the Vermont Respite House after struggling courageously against cancer.

She was born Jan. 8, 1959, in New Haven, Conn., daughter of Wolfe and Varian Schmokel. Her family moved to Essex, Vt., when she was young and she spent her childhood there.

Sylvia attended Westover School in Middlebury, Conn., and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont.

She lived in New York City for many years working at Prentice Hall Publishing and taking art classes at Cooper Union. Eventually, she married and returned to Vermont to raise her children.

Sylvia did not remain married, but ended up settling in Stowe, where she lived for the past 20 years.

Sylvia always sought ways to express her creative energies. She was a talented painter and enjoyed playing piano and singing at Stowe Community Church. She was deeply spiritual and was a member of the Circle of Friends in Lamoille County.

Sylvia was an avid traveler. She took many trips to Europe, particularly Germany, France and Italy. She had incredible talent with languages and enjoyed practicing her German, French and Italian skills while abroad.

Survivors include two sons, Gareth and Kyle Trevor of Stowe; the father of her children, Thomas Trevor of Sarasota, Fla.; her father and stepmother, Wolfe and Kay Schmokel; a sister, Clarissa Adams and husband Krister of Waterbury; two brothers, Frederick Schmokel and wife Kathy of Alexandria, Va., and Marcus Schmokel and wife Mary of Canton, Ga.; her former sister-in-law, Sarah McAllister of Middlesex; and nieces and nephews, including Sydney Adams, Erik and Kurt Schmokel, Alex Schmokel and Gwen Cole, and two great-nephews and a great-niece.

Her mother, Varian Schmokel, died earlier.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at Stowe Community Church on Main Street. Sylvia asked those attending her service wear blue and white, as she was not a fan of black.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in her memory to Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr Ave., Morrisville, VT 05661, or to Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495. People can share memories and condolences at awrfh.com.
