No injuries were reported Tuesday when a Stowe school bus was struck by a Subaru station wagon.
There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Bus driver John Beecy of Stowe was heading up Mountain Road at 11:45 a.m. to pick up students at Stowe Middle-High School when the accident happened.
A Subaru coming the other way, driven by Marie Hoyniak of Essex Junction, crossed the center line and hit the rear tire on the bus, damaging and dislodging the rear axle.
Both vehicles had extensive damage and had to be towed. The airbag in the Subaru deployed.
Hoyniak told police she had taken her eyes off the road momentarily to reach across the front seat of her car. She will get a traffic ticket for failing to stay on her side of the road, said Sgt. Bruce Merriam of the Stowe police. Hoyniak is a teacher at Stowe Middle School.
An official from the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles inspected the bus and found no violations.
Percy Transportation, which operates Stowe school buses, deployed another bus to replace the one driven by Beecy.
“We were thankful that everyone was wearing a seat belt,” Merriam said. “It definitely saved some people today.”
The road was temporarily closed until the Stowe Fire Department arrived to help deal with the accident’s aftermath.
“We truly had our hands full with the crash scene and the fire department stayed with us and helped direct traffic,” Merriam said. “It made things a lot safer.”
