The Stowe Fire Department has completed installation of a dry
hydrant at 2481 Nebraska Valley Road in Stowe.
The new hydrant is part of an overall fire-protection program for
Stowe’s more rural areas, which involves installing dry hydrants in
places with limited water supplies.
A dry hydrant is essentially a pipe that has one end in water — a
pond, stream or cistern — and the other end rigged with a hydrant
attachment.
Firefighters can simply pull up to the dry hydrant, connect a fire
hose, and use a pump mounted on a fire truck to pull water to
battle a blaze.
The fire department gets help from the Vermont Rural Fire
Protection Task Force, through the Northern Vermont and George D.
Aiken Resource Conservation and Development Councils, in developing
the water-supply plan for firefighting.
