Hector Del Curto, artistic director of the Stowe Tango Music Festival, won a Grammy Award at the 60th annual awards ceremony, held Jan. 28 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Del Curto, a bandoneon player, joined composer and pianist Pablo Ziegler and guitarist Claudio Ragazzi as the Pablo Ziegler Trio on “Jazz Tango.” The album, released in May 2017, is the first tango album to win in the Latin Jazz category.
Ziegler performed at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in 2011, was the Stowe Tango Music Festival’s first guest artist in 2013, and his 2005 release “Bajo Cero” won a Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album.
Emmy winner and nominee Ragazzi has composed music for projects around the world, including feature films, documentaries and commercials, and he teaches film composition at his alma mater, Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Del Curto’s Stowe connection began in 2001 with Jo Fish, a Stowe resident who founded the nonprofit Argentine Tango Society and is chairman of the festival, but his strongest bond was formed in 2005, when he brought an orchestra, including cellist Jisoo Ok, to perform at the Trapp Family Lodge meadow. He and Ok later married and have a 10-year-old son, who performed at the Festival last year.
The Stowe Tango Music Festival, scheduled Aug. 16-19 this year, is notable for both its unique series of performances and high level of musical training. Last year, the festival’s public programs, including concerts, workshops, lectures and milongas, drew about 1,600 people to Stowe.
