Recreational skiers could cruise down corduroy surfaces on the slopes adjacent to Spruce Peak’s Main Street, the venue for the UVM Carnival’s alpine events this past weekend.
Meanwhile, on the competition hill, the UVM Catamounts took advantage of home court advantage, surging to victory on a surface so bulletproof that, if someone had the goods, they could win even though starting last, according to multiple coaches on the hill.
The Carnival’s Nordic events at Trapp Family Lodge consisted of Friday’s men’s 10K and women’s 5K Nordic freestyle events.
Stowe Mountain Resort/Mount Mansfield Ski Club’s alpine events on Friday included both the men and women’s slaloms.
Again on Saturday, both Nordic and alpine events were contested, with the men’s 15K and women’s 10K classics on the Nordic side at Trapps and the men’s and women’s giant slalom at Stowe Mountain Resort.
UVM continued its domination of its own carnival, sweeping to its 16th straight victory with a total of 940 points. Second-place Dartmouth had 884 points and third-place UNH had 782. Middlebury and Colby College rounded out the top five with 661 points and 537 points, respectively.
The UVM men’s slalom sweep — Dominique Garand, William St. Germaine and former Smugglers’/BFA/MMSC racer Taylor Wunsch finished 1-2-3 — on Saturday clinched the win for the Catamounts.
They made a strong showing in Friday’s giant slalom, with former MMSCer Griffin Brown in second, Garand in third and Wunsch in sixth.
The UVM women also placed well in slalom with Kristina Johannessen-Riis second, Laurence St-Germain in fourth and Elli Terwiel in fifth.
UVM also had solid Nordic results. In the women’s 5K freestyle, UVM’s Mary-Kate Cirelli took second with Alayna Sonnesyn and Stephanie Kirk fifth and seventh.
In the 10K classic, Cirelli also placed second and Kirk was 10th.
In the men’s 15K classic, UVM’s Tobias Trenkle and Jack Hegman finished third and fourth.
All told, 21 different Catamounts scored points for their team.
Both kids and pros
Unusual in the world of sports, collegiate ski racing incorporates the competition between the colleges with the ongoing, season-long U.S. Ski Association (USSA)/Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS) competitions in one event.
Coaches can “intend” for an athlete by informing USSA that an athlete is interested in being selected for an event. There is an additional quota of 20 athletes — 10 per gender — selected by the two-event National Team Selection Method. The gender split can also be changed to 15 and 5.
This is the equivalent of including both high school and professional basketball players in regular-season NCAA games. Not really possible in a team sport, but in an individual sport like skiing, this is possible.
So, in addition to the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association teams and their members — such as UVM, Dartmouth, University of New Hampshire, Middlebury College, Colby College, Williams College, Bates College, St. Lawrence University, Harvard University and St. Michael’s College — interspersed on the results sheets were some other names familiar to many in ski racing.
The Redneck Racing crew team had some very good results. The overall results (not just the collegiate race results) show Robby Kelly taking second, Andrew McNealus ninth and Tucker Marshall 15th in giant slalom on Friday, with Robby Kelly pulling off the win on Saturday in the slalom with Marshall fourth. McNealus didn’t finish the second run Saturday.
Three MMSC juniors “skied up” through the intent process: Sandra Schoepke, Ingrid Klinkenberg and Ashley Hauser. Schoepke and Hauser DNF’d the first run and Klinkenberg did not qualify in Friday’s giant slalom. However, in Saturday’s slalom, Schoepke and Klinkenberg made it onto the results sheet, finishing 45th and 46th respectively and gaining valuable experience competing at a higher level.
They may one day join their current or former MMSC counterparts such as Griffin Brown and Taylor Wunsch on the men’s side and Kelsey Chenoweth, now at Bates (12th in giant slalom, 14th in slalom), and Alita Rogers, now at St. Lawrence (35th in giant slalom, 25th in slalom) on the women’s side.
