For the second time, Charlotte Brynn of Stowe swam the 25-mile length of Lake Memphremagog on July 19, from Magog, Quebec, to Newport, Vt.
Brynn made the swim in 13 hours, 28 minutes.
Brynn, director of The Swimming Hole, chose to swim north to south in the face of a slight current against her and headwinds that rose to 10 to 12 mph on occasion. The winds were calm during the start and calmed again during the last few hours of her swim.
Cynthia Needham of Hyde Park served as crew for Brynn in the escort boat Django, a handmade 16-foot wooden dory piloted by Phil White of Kingdom Games.
This is the second time Brynn has swum the 25-mile length of Lake Memphremagog. She was one of four to complete the inaugural In Search of Memphre in 2011. During that swim, fierce headwinds throughout the night forced six swimmers to pull from the water.
The search was held on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, in part to re-establish cross-border swimming on the lake and to promote a more open border between Canada and the United States.
Brynn is a well-known ultra-marathon swimmer. She has swum the 28 miles around Manhattan, crossed the Catalina Channel in California, and done a double crossing Lake Champlain. She won the Lake Willoughby swim in 2013 and the 25-kilometer Border Buster in 2016 with a time of 7 hours, 55 minutes and 46 seconds.
She is also an ice swimmer and winter swimmer, serving on the organizing committee of the Memphremagog Winter Swim Festival.
In 2016, Brynn was inducted into the Vermont Open Water Swimming Hall of Fame.
