Richard Kurin, a top official at the Smithsonian Institution, will speak and sign books at Norwich University’s Dole Auditorium in Northfield on Friday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m.
Kurin is a cultural anthropologist and the Smithsonian’s undersecretary for history, art and culture.
Kurin will talk about American history as reflected in iconic objects, as outlined in his most book “The Smithsonian’s History of America in 101 Objects.” Those objects include President Abraham Lincoln’s top hat, the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” and the kitchen of renowned TV chef Julia Child.
The public is welcome to Kurin’s talk, hosted by Norwich University’s Sullivan Museum and History Center and the Friends of the Krietzberg Library. The museum became a Smithsonian affiliate last year, the only one in Vermont.
At the Smithsonian, Kurin is responsible for most of the museums, and several research and outreach programs. He has been honored for his contributions to American folklore, and this year was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
