Donald L. Nelson, 84, of Tolland, Conn., died at his home Nov. 20, 2015.

Donald L. Nelson, 84, of Tolland, Conn., died at his home Nov. 20, 2015.

He was born in Waterbury March 7, 1931, son of Adolph and Minnie (Guyette) Nelson.

He spent five years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving on the USS Pine Island.

After the war, he worked for McDonnell Aircraft and for Pratt & Whitney.

Donald was an elder, song leader and teacher at the Manchester (Conn.) Church of Christ for many years. His favorite Bible verse was Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

He was an award-winning wood carver and an avid fisherman and hunter. His sense of humor brought joy to everyone he met.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Mitchusson Nelson of Tolland; a son, Eric Nelson of Tennessee; a daughter, Lori Ann Nelson of California; a daughter-in-law, Fran Nelson of Connecticut; four grandchildren, Margie Newman of California, Ryan Mason of Oregon, and Will and Mary Rebecca Nelson of Connecticut; four great-grandchildren, Suzianne and C.J. Newman and Amelie and Lorelei Mason; a sister, Janice Martinet of Vermont; and 14 nieces and nephews.

A son, Gregory, died earlier.

A memorial service was held Nov. 24 at the Manchester Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a hospice organization. Online condolences can be sent through the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home.
