Nelson-Merrill, Burks-Graham tops in tourney

Country Club of Vermont in Waterbury Center drew 62 competitors for its annual Member-Member Golf Tournament.

The format for the two-day event was better net ball of partners.

Winners in the men’s division were Whip Burks and Doug Graham, who shot rounds of 62 and 63; total strokes of 125 were 19 under par.

Runners-up were Gene Napoliello and Will Widen, who shot 66-61, 17 under par.

Women’s division winners were Millie Merrill and Lisa Nelson, who shot 69-63; their total of 132 was 12 under par. Jane Austin and Joyce Lewis were runners-up at 72-70, two under par.

Medalist honors for the best two-day low gross were also awarded to Marino Bartolomei and Doug Hailey, who shot 70-68 for a total of 138, six under par. Low gross honors in the women’s division went to the team of Lisa Carrick and Faith Parker, who shot 88-85 for a total of 173, 29 over par.

The two-day event is the first major tournament of the season at Country Club of Vermont. A cocktail party capped Saturday’s events; awards were presented immediately following play on Sunday afternoon.
