Now that spring is here, it is time for homeowners to clean up their property after the long, frigid winter.

Here’s a checklist from Criterium-Lalancette Engineers, a Rutland-based company that provides comprehensive inspections of homes and commercial buildings throughout Vermont and New Hampshire.

  1. Check and repair any damaged windows and doors.
  2. Remove wooden storm windows and install screens.
  3. Wash the windows.
  4. Clean or replace heating and air-conditioning system filters.
  5. Check heating and air-conditioning system for leaks, cracks and dirt.
  6. Caulk or fill any areas where insects may enter the house.
  7. Clean gutters and downspouts, check for leaks and cracks.
  8. Check house for peeling paint.
  9. Seal any cracks in brick or masonry.
  10. Inspect the roof surface, flashing, eaves and soffits.
  11. Check decks, patios, porches, stairs and railings for loose fittings and deterioration.
  12. Test outdoor lights and replace bulbs as needed.
  13. Trim bushes and trees away from house.
  14. Check trees and other landscaping for winter damage; prune as needed.
  15. Check drainage ditches and drain tiles for obstructions.
  16. Check yard for large depressions or heaving that may indicate drainage problems.
  17. Check for and repair any driveway or walkway cracks.
  18. Reseal asphalt driveways and walkways.
