Derrick was born Feb. 26, 1978 in Morrisville. He graduated from Lamoille Union High School in 1996.
Derrick was a legacy in the community, and a real “people person.” He participated in the Special Olympics for a number of years and was known for his basketball skills, in particular his uncanny ability to make 3-pointers. He won many 3-point competitions when he was in grade school.
Derrick enjoyed watching and following World Championship Wrestling. He was talented in many ways, from making model houses with Popsicle sticks to helping his family design their own homes and assisting with TV hookups. He was a great singer, enjoyed singing karaoke and was a DJ at Lamoille County Mental Health functions.
Derrick is survived by his parents, Steve and Julie Maskell of Eden Mills; his siblings, Jordan Maskell, Sierra Maskell, Hunter Maskell, Kaiden Maskell and Mariah Maskell, all of Eden, and Jonathon Maskell and Ernest Maskell of South Carolina, and Chris Dompiere (Ruth); grandparents Ronald and Mary McLean of Eden and Rosalie Wagner of Morrisville; his cousin, Brad, who was more like a brother; nieces and nephews Brooklynn Madalynn Cyko, Jace Truell, Brayden Truell and Terrance Maskell; aunts and uncles Trudy Griggs, Kelly and Sherry Jones, Eddie and Carolyn McLean, Calvin and Von Maskell, Dennis and Lisa Maskell, Penny Maskell, Candy Maskell, Debbie and Winston Tallman, Chester Chase, Bruce and Donna Wagner and Sue Wagner, and many loved cousins. He was predeceased by grandparents Clayton Wagner and Calvin and Nadine Maskell; and aunts and uncles Marilyn Chase, Darrell Maskell, David Maskell and Clayton Wagner.
A celebration of Derrick’s life will be held Wednesday, July 18 at 11 a.m. at the Lamoille Valley Church of the Nazarene, with a reception to follow at the church.
Faith Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at faithfh.net.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lamoille County Mental Health Services, Self-Advocacy Group, 72 Harrel St., Morrisville, VT 05661.
