Lester Rethel Small, 80, a lifelong resident of Morrisville, died at his home in Johnson on July 30, 2019, surrounded by family.
Lester was born Jan. 28, 1939 to William Douglas and Eva (Ravelin) Small of Randolph Road in Morrisville.
Lester and his beloved wife, Madonna (Hoadley) were married for 58 years and farmed the well-known and picturesque Small Farm on Randolph Road. A quintessentially hardworking Vermonter, Lester’s photograph frequently appeared in newspapers and calendars as he worked the fields.
Lester and Madonna had six children who grew up doing their share on the farm: Lisa Dawn and her husband, Andy Rich of Morristown; Suzanne Eva and her husband, Rodney Dickson of Morrisville; twin sons, Lester Eric and Leslie Edward Small, both of Morristown; Darla Lee Clement of Troy; and Douglas Rethel Small and his wife, Lisa of Johnson. Lester also leaves 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; and siblings Winston Small of Morrisville, Evelyn Small, William Small Jr. and his wife Sandy of Morrisville, Marlene Wheeler of Hardwick, and Everett Small and wife Sally of Morrisville.
Lester’s parents died earlier, as did two brothers, Winford Small and George Small; a brother-in-law, Luther Wheeler and sister-in-law, Clara Manning Small.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Faith Funeral Home, 165 Brooklyn St., Morrisville. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Aug. 4 beginning at 3 p.m. at the Hyde Park VFW. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
