As part of Greensboro Free Library’s summer reading theme “A Universe of Stories,” celebrating space and the Apollo 11 landing on the moon 50 years ago, a field trip is planned to the Northern Skies Observatory in Peacham.

The observatory, built in 2012, has been the site of regular public observation events such as the Venus Transit in June 2012. All ages are welcome in this free opportunity to visit the observatory  Friday, Aug. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m.; rain date is Aug. 10.

Astronomer Brad Vietje will talk about space, telescopes, and what’s happening in the sky, and will field questions.

After dark, families will be able to look through the solar telescope and the nighttime telescope.

Meet at the Greensboro library at 6 p.m. to caravan to the observatory. Space is limited, so registration is necessary at greensborokids@gmail.com.
