Steve Dobrin is helping local businesses that need a chief financial officer, but can’t afford to hire one full-time.

Businesses that need a little financial knowhow can now rent an expert through the Lamoille Economic Development Corp.

John Mandeville, executive director of the nonprofit, thinks his new CFO-For-Rent program will help businesses boost their financial savvy and achieve new goals.

The expert is Steve Dobrin, a certified public accountant in Jeffersonville who will be paid by Lamoille Economic Development Corp. to help businesses.

A similar program involving a website developer in Hyde Park has been successful for about six years, Mandeville said.

“The two issues that small businesses always have are marketing and finances. We figured if we could help with both of those things, it should go a long way,” he said.

Dobrin “can help them to accurately create their own financial information. Unfortunately, most small business people really don’t know how to read their own financial statements. He can help keep them on the straight and narrow in terms of understanding what their cash flow needs are going to be. He can even help some companies to get their financial house in order so they can borrow more money from the bank.

“There’s any number of things that a good CFO who understands how small businesses work can do to put a small business back on a healthier financial track.”

Dobrin says most business owners are too busy working in their business to work on their business, and that’s where a good financial adviser can come in.

His resume includes time as chief financial officer for Bourne’s Energy, as vice president of finance for Milton’s NG Advantage, and as a consultant for Fred’s Energy.

“We have great ideas, but a lot of times, the market won’t allow you to increase your prices, for example,” so a CFO can help business owners find solutions to cash flow and investment problems, Dobrin said.

Dobrin’s time is available first-come, first-served through the Lamoille Economic Development Corp. at or 802-888-5640.
