A man accused of engaging in sexual activity with an 8-year-old girl said he would cooperate with police if it meant the alleged victim wouldn’t have to be involved in any criminal proceedings.

Bryant M. Griggs, 29, of Eden turned himself in to police on June 27 after they confronted him about the alleged encounter, according to Detective Scott Kirkpatrick of the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department.

Griggs pleaded not guilty last week in Lamoille County Superior Court to charges of aggravated sexual assault and lewd and lascivious conduct, both with a minor.

The girl told investigators that Griggs had touched her in a sexual manner. He said he never touched her sexually, but said he did engage in sexually related acts with the girl, including voyeurism, as many as five times over the past year.

According to Kirkpatrick’s affidavit, he interviewed Griggs at the Morristown Police Department after the girl’s mother tried to assault Griggs as he sat in his vehicle.
