The Stowe Area Flag Football League played four games on the polo fields on a beautiful fall day, Sunday, Oct. 14.
Division 1 (Grades 3-5)
Bears 42, Saints 12
Robby Schulze from the Saints rushed for one touchdown and threw another to Hugo Vanovac. Solomon Berlin and Stephen Barnes each had a catch. Devin Garvey, Cooper Greene, Brian Pena, Jack Semprebon and Vanovac all took turns running the ball, but couldn’t quite break away from the tough Bear defenders.
Braxton Orr and Barnes each had a nice kick return. And though the Saints defense had a tough time corralling the Bears runners, they were able to make some nice stops. Vanovac led the Saints with five flag pulls. Barnes, Berlin, Garvey, Greene, Orr, Pena, Schulze and Semprebon all got in on some flag pulls as well.
The Bears played well as a team and utilized some new offensive formations to shake things up. With touchdowns from David McLaughlin, Miles Lane and William Frame, they took the lead against a tough Saints defense. An interception by Henry King turned up the momentum and catches by Kelly Apple, Paddy Heraty and Carter Matthews all contributed to a well-organized offense. Rex Wise and Reuben Berlin invaded the backfield pulling some great flags and Jackson Haggerty threw several big passes for significant gains.
Patriots 32, Rams 20
The Rams suffered their first loss of the season last Sunday to the Patriots 32-20.
Although bolstered by a great touchdown run by Zoey Anderson, the offense never found its rhythm against the stifling Patriots defense. The Patriots got on the board first behind a touchdown pass from Hayden MacDonald and the defense quickly took over with Garnet Matson pulling in a key interception on defense and then scoring on a long run on the ensuing drive.
Declan Coggins also added a long touchdown run on a well-executed reverse before the end of the half.
The second half was a defensive battle with Tanner Carlson scoring a safety behind two phenomenal defensive plays to start the half, putting the Patriots ahead 20-8 early in the third quarter.
The second half also featured excellent play for the Rams on the defensive side of the ball by Lily Murphy, Ben Clapp and Max DeRuzza holding the Patriots offense to only one score behind some nice running and special teams play by Sam Stalter in the second half.
In the end the Patriots defense came up big when Jaxson Ruane intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and took it all the way back for a touchdown to solidify the win.
This week the Rams (2-1) hope to get back on the winning track and look forward to visiting the Bears.
Coach Jonah returned to the team this week, to see the Patriots improve to 2-1; they play the Saints next week.
Division 2 (Grades 6-8)
Packers 28, Lions 21
Giants 27, Chiefs 12
In the 2nd match up of the season, the Lions fell to the Packers 28-21 to even the series 1-1. This was classic football as the teams traded touchdowns throughout the game to keep the score even. The Lions defense played well behind Ryder Colgan’s two interceptions. The Lions drove to the Packers 7-yard line with three minutes left in the game but were unable to punch it in as the Packers D held tight and the last pass into the end zone fell incomplete.
In the fourth game of the day, the Chiefs beat the Giants 27-12.
