At its first meeting of the year on April 6, the Green Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented the Rev. Rick Swanson with its 2018 Community Service Award for his leadership in creating an emergency homeless shelter during the winter of 2017-18.
Father Rick opened the doors of St. John’s in the Mountains Church to provide a warm and welcoming place for neighbors in need. Other faith leaders, social services and community volunteers joined in and together were able to provide shelter for homeless people until the end of the extremely cold weather.
The temporary solution resulted in securing a permanent emergency shelter. Through the efforts of many, including the Lamoille County sheriff and the state, a renovated house on the sheriff’s property in Hyde Park became The Lamoille Community House with a salaried director and staff, as well as the many area volunteers.
The Lamoille Community House began serving the homeless in February of this year.
