Last Thursday Stowe Rotary welcomed Wendy Knight, commissioner of the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing, who shared her vision and goals for bringing more visitors to the state at the Town & Country Resort in Stowe.
Knight also talked about the challenges Vermont faces in growing its tourism market share. New York invests $50 million in tourism marketing, Maine $15 million, and New Hampshire invests $8 million.
Vermont’s tourism marketing budget is $3.1 million.
The good news is that the Vermont brand is one of the best in the country, Knight said, so as long as the state invests wisely and in the right markets, she is confident the state can grow its market share.
A longtime resident of Panton, Vt., Knight ran her own marketing and communications firm prior to taking on this role. She has written two travel books and is a former freelance writer for the New York Times. One of her first pieces for the Times was “Journeys: 36 Hours in Stowe.” Check it out at nyti.ms/2w68pL4.
