Sponem "Bears" & Jeannette

The Sunset Grille and Taproom will hold an event Nov. 12 to raise money for a longtime Stowe Mountain Resort ski patroller.

In July, Randy “Bear” Sponem suffered a serious stroke and the recovery process has been difficult. To compound the tragedy, his beloved wife and primary caregiver, Jeannette, died in September.

Now, friends are raising money to help the Sponem family with medical costs.

For 25 years, Randy Sponem patrolled Stowe Mountain Resort. With his booming voice, broad smile and a larger-than-life personality that matched the man known to ski patrol buddies as “Bear,” Sponem kept skiers and snowboarders safe on the slopes and made sure they went home happy.

The event will be held from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., and attendees can RSVP at bit.ly/stowebearfundraiser. Online contributions are also being accepted at bit.ly/bearsponem.
