A Stowe couple has pleaded guilty in Lamoille Superior Court to stealing money from an 82-year-old woman last year.

John Allen, 58, and Katherine Allen, 55, each pleaded guilty June 19 to financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult of less than $500, a misdemeanor.

The Allens were each given a one-day to 12-month sentence, which was suspended during good behavior. They were placed on probation for two years.

According to an affidavit filed with the court, in late October, Theresa Howard told police her sister, Katherine Allen, was stealing money from their elderly mother, Corrine Westower.

An investigation showed the Allens had allegedly taken more than $5,000 from Westower’s bank account, while caring for her, to pay off debts, the affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, the couple allegedly told police they weren’t aware they couldn’t use Westower’s bank account to pay their bills.

The Allens were accused of stealing the money between December 2011 and the fall of 2012, the affidavit said. Both were originally charged with felony counts of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, but the charge was reduced in a plea agreement. Katherine Allen was also charged with violation of conditions of release, but the charge was dropped at the prosecution’s request.
