Retroski: Greg Morrill

Greg Morrill

Last week I received an email from Ed McGovern after submitting my column on Glen Ellen. He and his family had been Glen Ellen skiers and identified Walt Elliott as the founder. Ed remembered that Walt Elliott used to open the area on Thanksgiving and serve free turkey to all who came.

In 1972, Ed was 10 years old and on the lift when the brake failed. He says, “One of the chairs from the other side (now racing uphill) broke off and hit ours — actually dented the side. We stayed on but were prepared to jump as the folks behind us did. Stopped about 10 chairs away from the bullwheel at the bottom!” That chairlift stopped when enough chairs jammed going around the bullwheel to provide a braking action.
