To the Editor:
The Stowe Education Fund was formed in 1997 and has been a 100 percent volunteer organization since 2011. Our mission is to support and enhance education in the Stowe public school system.
With your generous support, we have been able to fund $266,000 in programs and resources at Stowe Elementary, Middle and High Schools over the past eight school years.
The future of our organization became uncertain with the passage of Act 46 and the forced mergers of the Stowe School District and the Elmore-Morrisville School District. The Stowe Education Fund’s legal charter enabled us to raise funds to support the Stowe School District. As that district no longer exists, we are unable to continue fundraising.
During the past several months, we considered possible options, but the challenge of fundraising in three towns, rather than one, and for seven schools, rather than three, is simply more than our small group of volunteers can manage successfully.
Additionally, after the Stowe Education Fund was dissolved, an entirely new nonprofit would need to be formed under a new charter.
The Stowe Education Fund holds endowment funds that have accumulated over time. Because these funds were raised prior to the Stowe School District being dissolved, the fund can distribute this money to the Stowe schools. During this period of transition, these funds will be allocated to provide continued support for programs we have long funded.
We are truly grateful for the variety of ways you have shown your support for our organization. You have made a significant difference in the education of our students. You can continue to support our schools in many ways: volunteer, attend meetings to stay informed, and thank faculty members for making a difference every day. The PTO and Booster Clubs are valuable parent-run groups that provide financial support for our schools. We encourage you to get involved with them.
We will be working with the schools and administration to identify and prioritize the needs and programs that would be best served in the near-term with the hope that these items will be part of the school budget in coming years.
We will communicate our progress, welcome your input and ideas, and thank you for your support throughout the past two decades of the Stowe Education Fund’s work.
