To the Editor:

As the director of the Stowe Free Library, I would like to assure the community that the library is in good hands.

The past week has been difficult for me and for you all, but we will get beyond this catastrophe and come back even stronger.

The damage that our beautiful Helen Day Memorial Building sustained was significant but it was limited to the original building, namely the front half. The company hired to clean up the debris has been removing the damaged areas and using its expertise to dry out the building. Once the damage control is complete, the building will begin to be reconstructed. The Stowe Public Works Department has been instrumental in overseeing this project and will ensure that the job is done correctly. I extend my many thanks to them.

About one-fourth of the adult nonfiction and fiction books have been impacted. The books have been separated according to their condition, and I am now busy creating a list for replacing the items that were water-damaged. The materials in the children’s area were unaffected.

As the insurance claim will not make our collection whole, the Friends of the Stowe Free Library will be rallying soon to conduct a restoration fundraiser. Be on the lookout for any information on this.

In the meantime, the library staff and I will be setting up a satellite library in the Memorial Hall of the Akeley Memorial Building. We will have four public-access computers, some current periodicals, and library materials for all ages available.

We have received many messages of condolences and support from the community. I thank you all and ask for your patience during this period of recovery.

The building housing the Stowe Free Library and Helen Day Art Center is currently closed to the public, but we have not forgotten the needs of our community and will do our best to provide services and materials to you as soon as possible.
