The North American Hockey Academy from Vermont captured the Junior Women’s Hockey League playoffs in Denver last weekend, winning the championship game 4-2 over Warner Hockey School.
The league is the top female hockey league for high-school-aged players in North America, with 10 teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Minnesota, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and NAHA, which is based at Jay Peak and was formerly headquartered in Stowe.
NAHA, the No. 1 team during the regular season, headed into the league playoffs as the top seed. The playoff involved a four-game, single-elimination format.
NAHA opened Friday against the Minnesota Thoroughbreds and won easily, 8-1.
On Saturday, NAHA poured 47 shots on goal against the host Colorado Select and won 5-0.
In the semifinals, NAHA played the Edge School of Calgary, which had won their last match-up. The back-and-forth game was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation, then went through a scoreless overtime. In a shootout, NAHA captains Paige Savage and Annie Pankowski both scored, putting their team into the finals.
The Gold Medal game featured NAHA and Warner, the only two teams that have won the league championship in its history. The game was tied 2-2 after two periods, but Annie Pankowski scored twice in the third period, and goaltender Ashley Wilkes held Warner at bay.
