High school golf season is under way, and the Stowe Reporter checked in with Chris Eaton, the head coach of the Stowe High School’s golf team that’s won the past four Division 3 state titles, to see what to expect this season. Here’s a look.
Q: Turnout this season?
Another great turnout this year, about 20 boys and three girls.
Q: Who are some key returnees, or experienced golfers who will lead the team this year?
Max Gentle, a senior who has been part of the state championship team the past few years. Chace Newhouse, a sophomore who was part of last year’s state championship team and the team that traveled to the National Invitational. Lexi James, our returning girl golfer, will lead our ladies.
Q: Key newcomers to the team?
Lincoln Sinclair, a freshman.
Q: What are some strengths of the team?
We have a few returning players, which will help the new players adjust to competitive high school golf.
Q: Are there any areas you’re hoping to see improvement?
With losing three seniors, two of whom were on the team for four years with four state championships, we are hoping to get new players up to speed and round out our competing squad.
Q: Stowe has dominated Division 3 for years now, is another state title a goal and something the kids are talking about?
Another state title is definitely the goal.
Q: Are there any tournaments that you guys have circled on the calendar and are especially looking forward to?
The North Country Union Invitational is a great opportunity to play 18 holes during the regular season. Normally our matches are just nine holes until sectionals and states, so any chance we get to play 18 we take.
Q: Expectations for the season?
Be the top team in D-3.
