Take a victory lap, Stowe High School golf team — and why don’t you take it on the golf courses at Walt Disney World in Florida?

And so they did, attending the High School National Golf Invitational last weekend. The boys golf team was invited to the tournament because it won the Division 3 state championship last season. Every state champion from every state gets an invitation to the tournament.

The Stowe High team earned a ranking of 424th best among all high school boys golf teams in the nation.

Chris Eaton has been coaching the Stowe boys’ lacrosse, hockey and golf teams for the past six years. To prepare for the national tournament he tried to get his players out to practice as much as possible, but Ben Salvas, Clark Brown and Flynn Kearney all play other varsity sports during the spring season.

Brown and Kearney were both on the Stowe High lacrosse team that won a state championship, and Salvas competed in the state tennis tournament.

Before the golf team left for the national tournament, each player talked about favorite moments from the 2019 season.

• Max Gentle: “Obviously the major achievement was winning yet another state championship and getting the chance to compete in Nationals. However, as an individual I was very happy with how I played in the regular season matches, especially claiming medalist in three of the matches.”

• Clark Brown talked about his excitement for the national tournament: “It’s really hard not to have fun when you’re staying at Disney. As a team, I would love to have everyone play to the best of their abilities, so we can have the lowest score our team could possibly have. Then individually, I want to end my senior year with a bang, by having a great time with the boys.

“A few highlights that our team had were only losing one match throughout the season. Also, not only winning states, but beating every single team in the tournament as a D3 team, so we won every division.”

• Flynn Kearney: “Highlights this season were certainly winning our fourth straight state championship and this tournament has already been a highlight.”

• Ben Salvas: “Highlights from this past season would have to be getting D3 medalist and our team winning states for D3.”
