A Johnson State College student has been accused of raping a woman who also attends the school.

Thomas Genova, 22, of New Jersey is charged with felony sexual assault. He pleaded not guilty Oct. 14 in Lamoille County District Court and was released on $50,000 bond with a $5,000 cash deposit. If convicted, he faces life in jail and $25,000 in fines.

According to a police affidavit filed with the court, the woman told police she went to Genova's dormitory room to watch a movie after a party. At the party, she'd had two alcoholic drinks, the affidavit said.

She said Genova gave her a beer when she got to his room; she said she "left his room a couple of times and left my drink with him."

During the movie, the woman realized she "couldn't sit up very well anymore," the affidavit said.

She told police Genova began kissing her and undressing her, despite her protests and attempts to get him to stop, the affidavit said.

The woman said she faded in and out of consciousness, waking up to see Genova put on a condom, and once during intercourse, the affidavit said.

The woman went to the hospital afterward and was checked by medical personnel, the affidavit said.

In New Jersey, police said, Genova was charged last year with underage drinking and twice with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
