It’s been a while since the village of Hyde Park has had a restaurant, but Fork & Gavel has given people a new place to hold court for breakfast and lunch.
The restaurant in the old Hyde Park Village Market space — most recently occupied by Sweet Crunch bakery, for those whose memories don’t extend far back — quietly hung its open flag Sunday. By Monday, the secret was out, and the small place was packed at lunchtime.
Husband and wife John and Jenna Decker bought the building last year and extensively renovated the place. For now, Jenna is handling the dining room and John is doing most of the cooking.
As Hyde Park is the shire town, Main Street houses all kinds of governmental and nonprofit law-and-order offices — and the gavel in the restaurant name is a nod to the county courthouse.
The current menu covers the bases with a variety of breakfast plates, lunch sandwiches and wrap, salads and soups, just about everything under $10. There’s also a kids’ menu, with a charmingly named Char-CUTE-erie plate of cheeses, crackers and grapes.
Fork & Gavel is at 246 Main St. in Hyde Park village. For now, hours are variable, but it’s open for breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Sunday; see info at fb.com/forkandgavelvt.
