Oktoberfest season kicks off this weekend with a traditional Bavarian celebration at Trapp Family Lodge.

The sixth annual celebration at the iconic Stowe lodge — held at the DeliBakery — is designed to put people in the fall spirit with sprawling views of the Worcester Range, fresh mountain air, and a spirited celebration of Oktoberfest.

Admission is free, and the house’s own von Trapp Brewing lagers are available for purchase. People can buy a pint of Oktoberfest, Helles, Bohemian Pilsner, Vienna-style or Dunkel lager in a commemorative mug, and then practice holding it at arm’s length for future stein-hoisting contests.

The event begins at 2:30 p.m., and Johannes and Sam von Trapp will wield the wooden mallet for the official keg tapping at 3 p.m.

Once the bier starts flowing, the festivities continue with a barbecue: $29 per person for a serve-yourself feast of wursts, chicken, sauerkraut, strudels, tortes and more.

Throughout the event, the meadow will ring with the rich and brassy sounds of Inseldudler, Vermont’s own oompah band.
