The 43rd Music in the Meadow series from Stowe Performing Arts kicks off Sunday, July 7 at the Trapp Family Lodge Concert Meadow with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s 2019 TD Bank Summer Festival Tour.
This year’s program, “Strike Up the Orchestra!”, was crafted by guest conductor Sharon Lavery of Ossining, N.Y., who is making her VSO debut. Since 2007, she has been music director of the Downey Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble hailed as one of the best metropolitan orchestras in Southern California. Since 2004 she has held the post of cover conductor for the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and has also served as cover conductor for the San Diego Symphony.
For this performance, the VSO showcases the composers who set America to music: Gershwin, Joplin, Bernstein, Copland, and the foremost film composer of our generation, John Williams. VSO principal clarinet Kelli O’Connor is the featured soloist in a jazzy concerto written by Artie Shaw.
The concert closes with a dazzling fireworks display accompanying Tchaikovsky’s famous “1812 Overture,” and the beloved marches of John Philip Sousa.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for pre-concert picnics, and music begins at 7:30. Information and tickets: stoweperformingarts.com.
