A post on the Waterbury Front Porch Forum Feb. 12 accuses the Waterbury Record of refusing to publish a letter from an aggrieved parent of a disabled child in a dispute with the Waterbury town government.

The newspaper did refuse to publish the letter anonymously. We believe that our letters to the editor section needs to be honest with readers about who’s writing.

However, we did offer to have a reporter meet with the parent to discuss his or her viewpoints and how the town responded, and to keep the family’s identity anonymous.

The post on Front Porch Forum includes the full letter we received. Front Porch Forum did publish it anonymously; the parent is not using his or her real name in the post.

Users on Front Porch Forum are required to sign up with a name and address. According to the forum's website, "FPF neighborhood forums are private, limited to just the folks who live in each area, plus local public officials."

The Vermont Human Rights Commission ruled the town illegally discriminated against a disabled 10-year-old child at a summer camp in 2017.

The case will be discussed by the Waterbury Select Board in executive session; if no settlement is reached, the commission will decide whether to take the case to court. Read more here.
