A look at what’s happening on the local theater circuit.

‘Alumni Pie’

Girls Nite Out Productions presents “Alumni Pie,” Carole Vasta Folley’s comedy about reunion and second chances, on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Main Street Landing Black Box Theater in Burlington.

Additional performances are Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, and Wednesday to Saturday, Oct. 7 to 10. at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Sunday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m.

The play capitalizes on Vasta Folley’s keen sense of humor and her trademark quirky but believable characters to tell a story about the power of human connection.

Vasta Folley has a long connection with the Stowe Theatre Guild. She played Prudie Cupp in “Pump Boys and Dinettes” and Princess Winifred in “Once Upon a Mattress,” and directed “The Full Monty,” “Nunsense” and “Midwives.” In 2008, the playwright premiered “Pronouncing Glenn,” her inaugural work, with the Stowe Theatre Guild. She says, “The theater offers a truly intimate experience and, when you can get that crowd laughing, it’s the best. Comedy is my milieu. Even when I tell a sad story, there will always be some laughter involved. … I want to say something about our true nature and the crazy but loving way we connect with one another.”

Vasta Folley’s second play, “The Family of Ewe,” premiered in Burlington in 2013 and was selected by the Burlington Free Press as one of the year’s “Five Plays to Remember.” She received the 2015 Vermont Playwright’s Award for “The Sleepover — A Comedy of Marriage.” Flynn Center gave her a Vermont Artists’ Space Grant for the development of her drama “The Seymour Sisters,” a two-woman play that will tour Vermont in 2016.
