Improv in Waterbury

The Waterbury Reader Improv Troupe — WRIT — is looking for new members, and occasionally an audience.

The improvisational troupe is an inclusive, wildly feminist community group for age 21 and up. It meets Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Green Mountain Performing Arts, 37 Commercial Drive, Waterbury, at Routes 2 and 100.

On the last Tuesday of the month, performances are open to the public. A $2 donation will go directly to the studio rent.

Improv is a form of theater in which the the characters, plot, dialogue and more are made up on the spot. Popular improv shows include “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” True improv doesn’t have to be funny but it usually is.

The troupe avoids stereotypes and does not use other groups as the butt of any joke. No experience is needed to join. The group offers a safe zone to try something new and believes comedy and theater should strive to include everyone.

The first class is free; subsequent drop-ins are $4 each or $10 for the whole month.
