The High Fives Foundation has approved a $1,320 grant to provide massage and acupuncture for Matt Leonard at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., where he is recovering from a spinal cord injury he suffered in a ski accident this year in California.

Leonard was raised in Middlebury and attended Middlebury College.

He was doing a warm-up run at Alpine Meadows Resort in California when he skidded on ice, hit a mogul, lost one of his skis and slammed into a chairlift tower.

A spinal injury left him paralyzed from the chest town. High Fives stepped in to help provide massage and acupuncture, which promote blood flow and prepare the body for the next steps in recovery.

High Fives is headed by Roy Tuscany, who grew up in Waterbury.

Since its inception in January 2009, High Fives has assisted 72 athletes from 19 states with living expenses, insurance, travel, health, healing network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment, programs and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook and attitude). For this year, High Fives aims to award $266,000 in grants; so far, 11 athletes and two organizations have received 13 grants totaling $88,432.
