To the Editor:
I am writing to publicly express my appreciation to the wonderful folks who make up Stowe Mountain Rescue.
This past Tuesday I was at the summit of Mount Mansfield with my daughter and friends. We had come up the Halfway House trail and were just yards away from beginning our descent on the Sunset Ridge Trail when I took a step and rolled my ankle.
We decided to head to the Toll Road but despite a fair amount of ibuprofen, an ace bandage, hiking poles and the support of my hiking companions, I could not manage to make much progress.
Finally, we placed the 911 call, and thus began our introduction to an amazing group of people.
From their speedy arrival, competent and caring support and incredible skill getting me off the mountain (not to mention their good cheer in doing so), they were everything you’d hope for in your best rescue fantasy.
I’m not happy I had to be literally carried off the mountain, but I will be forever deeply grateful for their assistance.
I want to thank all the members of the Stowe Mountain Rescue crew for their time, care and generosity of spirit acting as volunteers in a demanding terrain. Thank you again for all you do to allow the rest of us to safely enjoy Stowe and all it has to offer. We can do so knowing that, if the unforeseen should occur, someone — namely, all of you — will be there to help.
P.S.: My donation is in the mail!
