The 45th annual Stowe Winter Carnival blasts off next week. The theme for this year’s celebration of the snowiest season is “To Stowe and Beyond/Outer Space.”

From Jan. 25 to 27, Stowe shines with fun activities for both young and old, from zany sports events, ice carving competitions and demonstrations, a youth ice fishing tournament, and the infamous snowgolf and snowvolleyball tournaments.

Here’s the schedule:

Friday, Jan. 25

• 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Professional ice carvers sculpt masterpieces in front of local businesses and hotels along Main Street (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.), Mountain Road (1 to 6 p.m.) and beyond. Food, drink and shopping specials may be available.

• 6 p.m. “Fire and Ice” lighting and interactive display with pro carver Erik Freay at Hob Knob Inn.

• Evening: Ice carvers’ welcome party at Sunset Grille & Tap Room

• 9 p.m. Live music and dance parties at Matterhorn and the Rusty Nail.

Saturday. Jan. 26

• 9 a.m. to noon, youth ice fishing derby (up to age 14). Fishing holes, bait and equipment provided. Awards for longest, shortest, and most fish caught. register at event. Commodores Inn.

• Noon to 4 p.m. National Ice Carving Association competition, Alchemist Brewery. Nationally sanctioned, 19th annual. “People’s choice” voting, too.

• 7 p.m. Après awards party, Stowe Inn.

• 9 p.m. Ice carvers Meltdown parties, Matterhorn and Rusty Nail.

Sunday, Jan. 27

• Snowvolleyball tournament: Snow sets the stage to dig, set and spike at Sunset Grille court. Six-person teams (mixed men/women). 9:30 a.m. registration at Sunset Grille, lunch and après awards follow tournament. Register: John Roy, 839-6092, jfroy683@gmail.com.

• Snowgolf tournament: One ball, one club, lots of snow. Four-player teams, 10-hole scramble, two divisions (“Tiger Woods Competitive” and “Lost in Woods Consumptive”). Themed costumes encouraged; prizes awarded. $140 per team or $35 per player. 10 a.m. registration at Rimrock’s Mountain Tavern; 11 a.m. costume judging; 11:30 rules briefing and dispersal; noon, shotgun start; 4 p.m. awards party at Rimrock’s.
