Residents of the six towns that compose the Lamoille North Supervisory Union school district narrowly approved the $19.7 million budget proposed for the Lamoille Union middle and high school, but narrowly voted down the $16.4 million budget proposed for the five of the district’s elementary schools.
The secondary school budget passed 1074-954, while the elementary budget failed 682-645.
While the elementary budget represented a nearly 15 percent increase in spending, the tax impact on the Lamoille North communities was projected to be an increase of only about 3 percent. The district has benefited from the controversial Act 127 education fund policy changes and been able to draw on more state funds while limiting the impact on property owners within the district.
Lamoille North superintendent Catherine Gallagher previously defended the district’s proposed budgets at its annual meeting and said they were responsible, sound and conservative.
