Why not the soccer team?
Why not cut the soccer team, or the baseball team, or the basketball team? Why does it have to be the same 65 kids every year?
“You don’t really expect us to cut soccer do you?” was the response from a school board member when the question was raised at a recent school board meeting. Well, I expect you to try to come up with solutions that are fair to all the students at the Stowe Middle/High School.
The teams that were cut last year — golf, Nordic, alpine and both the middle/high school cross-country teams — have proven their worth. They have done the physical labor in exchange for donations; they have sold the chocolate bars; they have held the fundraising barbecues. There is no justifiable reason why these team sports — yes, team sports — were cut.
The number of athletes participating is good, the sports costs are reasonable, the coaches are passionate.
I plead with the school board to give this another look. I hope community members will voice their opinions. There is a better way.
The 2011-12 budget plans to cut out various middle-level sports in addition to the four high school sports and one middle school sport that were cut last year. Not wanting to revisit this issue, the school board believes that these teams can raise the $38,000 necessary to be reinstated.
I urge the Stowe Reporter to study this issue because I believe the cost of these four varsity sports (46 student-athletes) and middle-school sports (50 student-athletes) for $38,000 is one heck of a deal.
Compare the costs of the other teams and other budget items. Start asking questions, demand answers, and attend the public meeting about the new school budget on Feb 21.
Keep thinking outside the box; there is a solution out there, one that brings equity in sports to all athletes in the Stowe schools.
