Despite a late season snowstorm last week, Vermont spring sports teams managed to get plenty of early season action. Here’s how the Raiders fared in the past week.
Girls’ lacrosse
Seven different Middlebury players scored goals as the Tigers upended the Raiders.
Mt. Abraham/Vergennes 9, Stowe 3
Annie Dufault had four goals and Anna Stillwell had a hat trick and an assist as Mt. Abe/Vergennes downed Stowe in the Raiders’ first game of the season.
Ella Hazard scored twice for Stowe and Iris Clayton added a goal. Milla Smith stopped 20 shots for the Raiders.
Boys’ lacrosse
Christian Gaudio had five goals to lead Milton to victory, but teammate Alex Harlow was lights out on the faceoffs, winning 20 of 24 for Milton.
Stowe 13, Mt. Abraham/Vergennes 12 (OT)
A high-scoring game went a little longer before Stowe put it away in overtime. Stowe had led 12-7 before Mt. Abe/Vergennes launched a fourth quarter comeback to force the extra period. Liam Newhouse completed a hat trick with his golden goal to end the game.
Wyatt Sigler had five goals and two assists to lead all scorers. Also scoring for Stowe were Leander Pinkham (2 goals) and Eider Newlin (1 goal, 1 assist). Carter Getty stopped six shots in goal.
Liam Newhouse scored five to lead all scorers as Stowe beat Milton the first game of the season. Wyatt Sigler had a hat trick and Leander (2 goals) and Eider Newlin (12 goal) rounded out Stowe’s scoring.
Boys’ tennis
Last year’s runners up, the Stowe boys started the 2024 tennis season with a one-point loss to Middlebury.
The Tigers got wins from its number one singles player and won both doubles matches.
For Middlebury in singles, Jackson Murray beat Ethan Pastella 6-0, 6-1 and Nate Cook Yoder beat Carter MacDonald 7-5, 6-2. In doubles, Eddie Fallis and Milo Rees beat Hugo Jercinovic and Declan Coggins 6-2, 7-5, whole Brian Newton and Eliot Hemminway beat Brock Roick and Drew Zimmermann 6-4, 6-4.
For Stowe in singles, Parker Duffey, beat Kellan Bartlett 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8); Max Bierman, beat Charles Young 6-0, 6-0 and Leo Jercinovic beat Iver Anderson 7-6, 6-3.
