On March 2 at Norwich University’s Kreitzberg Arena, the Vermont Youth Hockey State Tournament took center stage. Stowe Youth Hockey sent three teams to the championships, including the U12 girls’ squad.
Facing a tough Rutland team, the Stowe ladies fell 3-1. In the first period, Rutland’s Madison Bedard maneuvered past the Stowe defense to deposit the first goal of the game at the 4:57 minute mark. Despite opportunities by Stowe’s Reese Henderson, Claire McLaughlin and Molly Schultze, Rutland’s Nahla Hollinger kept the puck firmly out of her net.
In the second, Stowe knotted the score at 1-1 with six minutes to go. Claire McLaughlin chased down a stretch pass from Bridgette St. Pierre and fed it into the middle where Annabelle St. Pierre was ready to pounce. With a one-time smash, St. Pierre banged the puck off the goalie’s pads and into the top of the net.
Headed into the third, Rutland’s offense capitalized while their defense clamped down. Gabriella Bruttomesso and Mackenzie Corbin each scored goals to put the game out of reach.
Catherine McLaughlin did her part in goal for Stowe, as Natalie Kubalova and Madison Widen kept the strong Rutland offense largely at bay. Addison Kneale and Emma Nigro kept tabs on mid-ice with relentless and feisty play to keep the puck out of Stowe's defensive zone.
The team was coached by Jenna Mclane, Andrew Kneale, Will Widen and Matt Henderson.
