Attendees sport 1920s-style fashions at the Helen Day Art Center’s Great Gatsby Gala.

The 1920s have been very good to the Helen Day Art Center of Stowe.

The center collected more than $50,000 at its Great Gatsby Gala during the weekend, its biggest fundraising event of the year. The theme was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.

The gala “was a phenomenal success,” said Nathan Suter, executive director of the Helen Day.

About 240 people paid $125 per ticket to attend the event at Stowe Mountain Lodge, which included live music, dinner, dancing, and silent and live art auctions.

Suter said the art center has been building up its art auction, and has succeeded in persuading more artists to enter their work. Artists can receive a percentage of the sale proceeds if they choose.

More than 60 pieces of art were entered this year, and most of them were sold, Suter said. “We raised $24,000 just from the sale of artwork, and $24,000 more from other auction items.”

In addition, people were encouraged to make direct donations to art center programs that they like, such as youth classes, and the crowd donated $2,900 on Saturday night, a sum that will be matched by Everbank of Stowe.
