Nancy Jane (Reynolds) Spier, 93, died at her home in Jeffersonville on Saturday April 6, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Swanton on Oct. 30, 1930, daughter of the late Clifton and Marie “Ree” (Webster) Reynolds.
Nancy graduated from The University of Vermont in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in English. She student-taught at Derby Academy in Derby, and then attended the University of Connecticut where she earned her master’s degree and met her husband, E. Elden Spier.
Nancy and Elden were married on June 3, 1955. They moved several times following Elden’s career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company before settling down in Walpole, Mass. After Elden’s untimely death at 39, Nancy and her three children moved to Jeffersonville, where they had a summer camp and where Nancy’s parents had retired.
A devastating time for a young wife and mother, she ultimately went back to teaching after working hard to be re-certified. She showed great strength and fortitude moving forward to provide for her family.
Nancy later taught English at Lamoille Union High School, where she developed many long-lasting friendships with faculty, staff and students.
She was a 50-plus-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Nancy was a loving daughter, wife, mother, teacher and friend who will be missed by all who knew her. She loved her home in Vermont and was proud of her family’s Vermont heritage.
Passionate about history, she spent years gathering, sorting and labeling photographs from many family members to create an incredible pictorial genealogy. She also created a unique historical record of local people and events in the scrapbooks that she kept.
In her younger years she enjoyed landscape painting, restoring and decorating furniture and gardening. In later years she continued to love books and reading and was often working on a crossword puzzle to keep her mind sharp. Her wit and intelligence will be greatly missed. She valued family more than anything else and kept in close contact with her children, her brothers and their families.
Nancy is survived by her son, Steven Spier of Colchester; two daughters, Heather Martin of New Hampshire and Holly Spier of Jeffersonville and her partner, Ron Denison of Belvidere; two brothers, Clifton Jr. “Kip” Reynolds and wife, Bobbie of Rhode Island and Robert Reynolds and wife, Tibbie of New Jersey; two grandchildren, Liz Spier and Ethan Spier; several nieces and nephews; and her very dear to her heart, lifelong friends, her first cousin Irving Pollander of Jeffersonville and Sally Woods of Massachusetts.
Nancy was also predeceased by her husband, E. Elden Spier, and son-in-law, Dennis Martin.
Per Nancy’s wishes services will be private and at the convenience of the family. A special thank you to Jessica Prevost, Nancy’s Home Health nurse of eight years whose visits brightened her days and gave her loving care to the last moment.
Memorial contributions in Nancy’s memory may be made to Lamoille County Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr Avenue Morrisville VT 05661. Please visit awrfh.com to share your memories and condolences.
