After the $50 million handshake between Mount Mansfield Co. and Vail Resorts to have the Colorado-based giant take over ski operations at Stowe Mountain Resort, the assets need to be divvied up.
Mount Mansfield Co. will keep the resort’s real estate operations, and Vail will run the ski operations. But what does that really mean?
Rob Apple, planning director at Spruce Peak, outlined for the Stowe Development Review Board — literally, on a map — what Vail Resorts will be taking away from the sale.
Mount Mansfield Co., a subsidiary of American International Group, owns almost 1,800 acres of mountain elevations, nesting around land the state government owns up there.
On Tuesday evening, Apple asked the board to approve subdivision of the vast property.
It’s already naturally split by Route 108, so Apple first asked the board to divide the land across from the Toll House into a 2.8-acre parcel and an 11.7-acre lot. The smaller of the two is a dirt parking lot that will be part of the land Vail acquires. The Mount Mansfield Co. will keep the 11.7 acres for future development.
On the other side of Route 108, Mount Mansfield Co. got board approval to lop off a 22.7-acre parcel and a 4.9-acre one. The 4.9-acre parcel will surround the President’s House and the 11.7-acre parcel will include the Toll House lift. Both will be retained by Mount Mansfield Co., as well as the rest of the terrain, but the two smaller subdivisions will be leased by Vail Resorts as part of the ski operation.
The development review board approved all subdivisions and lot line adjustments without discussion.
Kurt Reichelt, who lives on Bingham Lane, brought up concerns about how that road will be maintained. It’s outside the town’s purview and has been looked after by Mount Mansfield Co., but that could change under the new ownership.
“The road is falling apart really bad,” Reichelt said.
The board recommended Reichelt meet with Mount Mansfield Co. officials.
