Marcel Leopold Fontaine, 66, of Walden died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Dec. 8, 1952, in Thetford Mines, Quebec, Canada, son of Fernand and Marguerite (Dodier) Fontaine. In 1959 his family moved to Vermont. He attended public school in Walden and Hardwick Academy.
On March 21, 1987, he married Sally Suzzette Fournier in Barton.
Following his education, he moved to Florida, where he worked as a herdsman on a dairy farm for several years. He returned to Vermont and operated a dairy farm in Stannard, and logged for many years.
Later, Marcel and his brother Marc started Fontaine Forestry and Millworks in East Montpelier, which they operated together until his health failed.
Marcel was a member of St. Norbert’s Church. He enjoyed Western movies, country music, sports cars, spending the winter in Florida, and time outdoors on his skidder.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Fontaine of Walden; two sons, Shawn Fontaine and wife Felicia White of Walden, and Justin Fontaine and girlfriend Brittney Watt of Hermon, Maine; his mother, Marguerite Fontaine of Barre Gardens; his siblings, Claude and Eileen Fontaine of Walden, Gillis and Lynette Fontaine of Hardwick, Marc Fontaine and Sharon Bissell of East Montpelier, and Lise and John Kohsiels of West Palm Beach, Fla.; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and many cousins.
His father, Fernand Fontaine, died in 2009 and a brother, Bruno Fontaine, died in 2013.
Friends may call Friday, Jan. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Norbert’s Church in Hardwick.
